Swan Lake

Tonight, I picked up a book of poems in my bookshelf. It's written by Teo Eesim, a friend of mine. There's a poem in this particular collection that's so poignant.

SWAN LAKE

It took her twenty years

to be a dancer

stretching

yearning

and paying the price

in sweat and pain.

Day in, day out

working for a flat turn-out

results

in muscles long and strong

like coiled steel

In the spotlight

she smiles as she glides,

swan like,

Odette-Odile alive.

Tomorrow it's over

and the barre exerts its power

as master

slave, partner

as she gets closer to perfection

but she knows-

The Perfect Dance is God's alone.
