Michael Jackson

MJ is dead. Everybody is on the bandwagon. I might as well hop in.

I was driving my parents to the hospital for a regular checkup. Mum was 'dronning' behind me. (That means she talking to me but about nothing of importance, therefore it feels like a steady stream flowing through my brain) One of MJ's songs were being played on the radio. Right after that, the DJ said something like, 'we are celebrating Michael Jackson's life......blah blah'

Celebrating his life???

I listen some more. Then, yes, it's true!

"Mum, Michael Jackson is dead!"

"HUH? Dead? How? When?" (That stopped her dead in her tracks!)

"Wait la, I listen some more la"

Silence from her while I listen to more details.

"Cardiac arrest"

"Aiyoh! So sad. He was VERY GOOD. I wonder he got apprentice"

Mum is a great MJ fan. It always tickles us to know that. Whenever any of his MTVs or concerts come on TV, my dad will tell mum, "Nah, your idol is on. Come and see la" It goes to show MJ's popularity goes beyond the age barrier.

Back then, when I was a teenager, I was moving to the sexy music of 'Rock With You'. Then there was the sugar-syrupy 'Ben'. It icky-fied me a bit when I found out Ben was a rat. And I actually have a Off The Wall record. But I don't think it'll fetch money. I saw the very same copy at a flea market the other day only going for RM10.

Moving on to the 80s, I have conducted many aerobic classes to his 'so-danceable' tunes. Who does not nod his head/toe tap or move in one way or another to Billie Jean or Beat It. One of David's 1st words were, "Who Bad?"

Then came my favourtie - Thriller. The music video was FANTASTIC! Even after all these years, it still hold a certain magic for me. Back then, EVERYBODY knew the choreography.

He's been coined The King of Pop. To me, he's The King of Pop not only as the king of popular music but for popping too. He was, perhaps, the 1st person I have seen popping. His slick moves, his Moonwalks and yes, even his crotch-clutching. So back to Mum's question, did he have any apprentice? I truly believe there can never be another MJ. Like there was never another Elvis.

Am I a fan? Of sorts, yes. I am not a FAN but I am definitely a fan. My brother chided my for not going to his concert when he was here many years ago. I can't remember the reason now. Perhaps it was because I could not afford the more expensive tickets and to go and sit about a mile away and watch the 'ant-size' of him performing was not my idea of fun. This may be the reason why whenever Alison goes for concerts, I clutch my heart and almost always get the most expensive tickets I can afford for her. I think it defeats the purpose of going for a concert and sit so far away. Might as well stay home and watch a recording.

No comments regarding his personal life here. I don't qualify to do so. But watching E-News etc, these interviews with people who have known him. Suddenly, they were his 'best friends' ,'confidante' ............ that they knew what was going on blah blah blah. But where were they when he was living in exile? Now he was 'suddenly' GREAT. It's so true everybody dies 'GREAT' and 'GOOD'. Excuse me, I am just standing on my soapbox here for a bit.

Having said much, there's no denying that MJ was a great performer and showman. His quest for perfection can be seen in his choreography, his videos and yes, his concerts.

To me, he'll live forever, in his songs, his moves and his impact on a lot of people's live too. So here's Queen's Who Wants To Live Forever dedicated to MJ

There's no time for us
There's no place for us
What is this thing that builds our dreams yet slips away
from us

Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever....?

There's no chance for us
It's all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us

Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?

Who dares to love forever?
When love must die

But touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today
Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?
Forever is our today

Who waits forever anyway?
