I have always been fascinated by the fact that a ugly caterpillar can turn into a beautiful butterfly.

I wonder, if the caterpillar ever looked up to the sky at those gorgeous butterflies and envied them. I wonder, if it ever imagined that one day it shall be a butterfly.

For most of us, we never imagine ourselves to be beautiful or nice or worthy. We simply take things at its face level. Every once in a while, when someone compliments a caterpillar, the caterpillar merely thinks there must be some mistake. Sometimes, I also believe that those compliments were delivered for some specific reasons, someone trying to raise the self esteem level of the caterpillar, perhaps.

So does one lie to do something nice? Perhaps. More often than not, the lie comes from a deeper darker place - a place called 'self-interest' . Yes, more often than not, the praiser wants something from the caterpillar.

And since the caterpillar has so few compliments in its short, short life, it will just believe.

Sometimes, a caterpillar never become a butterfly. Sometimes, it becomes an ugly moth, fluttering in the dark, lurking at corners.

Sometimes a caterpillar dies without ever becoming anything.
